  7. The Corporation for the National Academic, Scientific and Research
  8. Network (CRACIN), was established in Puerto Rico in 1991.  Constituted
  9. as a non profit organization, its main objectives are: the
  10. implementation, operation and development of the National Academic,
  11. Scientific and Research Network Network of Puerto Rico; and the
  12. improvement of the research and development activities in the fields
  13. of telecommunications and teleinformatics in Puerto Rico and the
  14. Caribbean Region.

  16. CRACIN represents the result of one decade of experience in academic
  17. networks across the island, the concertation of the main academic
  18. institutions of the island, and the interest of the government of the
  19. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in the development of the national and
  20. regional scientific & research community.

  22. At present, the majority of the universities of the island are formal
  23. members of CRACIN, and their support since the early stage of the
  24. concept represents the level of understanding of the networking issues
  25. earned by this community.

  27. Main activities of the Corporation at this time include:
  28. collaboration in the CUNet activities with the University of Puerto
  29. Rico and the American States Organization; collaboration with REDID
  30. and RUDAC in the Dominican Republic; participation in the Initiative
  31. for the Latin-America and Caribbean Network; and a number of other
  32. activities in Puerto Rico.

  34. In Puerto Rico, special projects are under development oriented in
  35. this first stage to the provision of basic communication services open
  36. to the general community, and the dissemination of the networking
  37. culture to all levels.
